Wal-Mart previews Disc to Digital movie service

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. previewed its "Disc to Digital" service for converting DVDs into an online library on Wednesday. Based on my experience, I'd give it a six out of 10.

That's the number of discs I was able to convert from a completely unscientific sampling of my personal DVD library.

The new service allows movie fans to walk into any Walmart, where they can present their old DVDs and get permanent access to an online version of each movie that can be streamed from a home computer or a mobile device. The DVDs are stamped with a special ink to prevent further conversion. The DVDs, however, can still be played. Each DVD conversion costs as little as $2.

Three of my four failed conversions were no surprise - two were obscure documentaries, and one was a film from The Walt Disney Co., which is not participating in the service. One was a bit puzzling: "Water for Elephants," a fairly successful romance released last year by 20th Century Fox, one of the studios that is partnering with Wal-Mart.

Some actors and directors have not agreed to sign over digital rights to movies they took part in. In the case of director George Lucas, that includes all six "Star Wars" movies.

Fox confirmed that the digital rights for "Water for Elephants" have not been cleared.

Art club learning centre opens

Cochrane’s Nan Boothby Memorial Library may now be home to the largest collection of art books and DVDs in the province. Most of the Anime distributor outside of Japan are simply licensors of the material

That’s since April 15 when the Cochrane Art Club officially opened its Art Learning Centre in a corner of the library that houses close to 350 books and DVDs donated by local businesses, the Cochrane Art Club and some private donations from families.

The art club has been working with the library to establish the collection that will serve as a resource for artists of all levels of experience and expertise.

The Art Learning Centre was established in part to recognise two long-standing members of Cochrane’s art community, Jan Luft who passed away in 2009, and Bill Dawson who died almost exactly a year ago.

Both families of the late artists wanted to create a legacy in the names of their loved ones, and representatives from both families were present at Sunday’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

“I’ve been painting for 35 years,” said Cochrane Art Club member, Shirley Edge,After a serious discussion, we has decided to open our anime merchandise spree again!!! Closing on “but there a DVD I’m dying to take out. You never ever stop learning.”
